Sand tray play therapy is powerful and unique.  It offers individuals a journey into themselves and their unconscious through the use of storytelling, metaphors, symbolism and archetypes.  We often create barriers that block our dreams, hopes and visions for a positive future.  Sand tray play therapy allows individuals to explore their past and transform their future within a “safe holding environment.”  Sand tray play therapy can be used in conjunction with traditional talk therapies to enhance and more fully depict their experiences into a realm in which words cannot reach.  The Sand Journeys training offers participants the tools necessary to help clients unlock difficult material by guiding them through their own personal journey and molding their experiences into something tangible and meaningful leading to profound changes in their life.  Come learn this amazing process and play in the sand!

Objectives:
  • Learn a brief history of sand tray play therapy
  • Learn the process of sand tray play therapy
  • Gain insight into the use of metaphors and symbolism in the sand tray play therapy process
  • Learn different psychotherapy modalities and how it is applied to the sand tray play therapy process
  • Complete at least three of your own sand trays (2 individual, 1 group)
  • Participate in role play using practice vignettes
  • Review of a sand tray play therapy series
  • Witness three to five sand trays

Description:  Filial Play Therapy is a highly effective intervention integrating family therapy and play therapy to address child and family problems. Therapists learn how to train and supervise parents as they conduct special child-centered play sessions with their own children (ages 3-12), an approach designed to resolve presenting problems while strengthening family relationships.

Filial Play Therapy has been used successfully with many child and family problems: oppositional behaviors, anxiety, depression, abuse/neglect, single parenting, traumatic events, attachment/adoption/foster care, relationship problems, divorce, family substance abuse, family reunification, chronic illness and others.  A research history spanning more than 40 years has consistently shown Filial Play Therapy to be cost-effective in facilitating positive and long-lasting child and family change.  The use of this relatively short-term, evidence-based approach has increased dramatically worldwide in recent years due to its effective, empowering approach to strengthening families.

Filial Play Therapy has been used in many different settings.  Furthermore, it has been embraced by many cultural and ethnic groups throughout the world because of its respectful involvement of parents as partners in the process of family change.

Learning Objectives:  Participants in this training will be able to…
• Describe at least 2 advantages of Filial Play Therapy over individual play therapy or
  other family therapy modalities.
• Describe at least 3 populations with which Filial Play Therapy has been effective and why.
• Explain what is meant by the “theoretically integrative” nature of Filial Play Therapy.
• Briefly summarize the empirical history of Filial Play Therapy.
• Perform the basic skills of child-centered play sessions.
• Train parents in the play session skills using mock play sessions.
• Provide constructive feedback to parents after actual filial play sessions.
• Discuss play themes and parent reactions with parents after actual filial play
  sessions.
